During His Tour of SUMED Petroleum Port in Ain Sokhna
Prime Minister Inspects the Petroleum Products and LNG Handling and Storage Terminal
Madbouly Boards the Regasification Unit and Reaches the Observation Point Overlooking the LNG Carrier to Follow Up on the Regasification Process
During his tour today of the SUMED Petroleum Port in Ain Sokhna, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, inspected the petroleum products and liquefied natural gas (LNG) handling and storage terminal at the port. He was accompanied by Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Major General Hany Rashad, Governor of Suez, along with a number of officials from the ministry and relevant authorities.
During the visit, the Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation listened to a briefing by Eng. Mohamed Abdel Hafez, Chairman of the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company (SUMED), on the significant development in the company’s strategic role and the capabilities of its infrastructure. Established in 1974, SUMED serves as a key link for transporting Gulf crude oil across Egypt. The company receives crude oil from marine tankers, or partially unloads their cargo at its storage facilities in Ain Sokhna, before transporting it through the SUMED pipelines—extending 320 km—to Sidi Kerir in Alexandria, where it is reloaded and exported to Europe.
The Chairman also reviewed the capabilities of the petroleum products and LNG handling and storage terminal and its marine jetty, which extends approximately 3 km and includes three berths designed to receive petroleum product tankers and regasification vessels for LNG injection. The berths reach depths of up to 19 meters, enabling the port to accommodate some of the largest petroleum product and LNG carriers in the world.
He added that the port receives imported LNG shipments from marine carriers, which are then transferred to the regasification vessels “Hoegh Galleon” and “Energos Eskimo” stationed at the marine jetty. The LNG is subsequently regasified and injected into the national gas grid to supply consumers in the domestic market.
During the tour, the Prime Minister boarded the regasification unit and proceeded to the observation point overlooking the LNG carrier to follow up on the procedures of the regasification process.
